| History of the Club | ||
| Club History The club was formed in 1980 by Frank Curran, John Tierney, Ian Anderson, Hughie McShane and Tam Gillies. Training sessions were held in Brannock High School Gymnasium until we moved into our current premises in Mosshall Street in 1982. The coaches of the club then were former professional British Bantamweight Contender Johnnie Morrisey, Archie McKay, Jimmy McPake and Ian Anderson. The club joined the Scottish Amateur Boxing Association and later briefly joined the breakaway Scottish Amateur Boxing Federation before deciding to rejoin the Association. The split that seperated these two orginisations ended in 2000 when the newly formed Amateur Boxing Scotland Ltd took charge and since then Scottish boxing has been thriving. Newarthill Boxing Club have succesfully produced boxers, many of whom became champions at both District and National level through-out the years with many of our boxers going on to represent their country at International level. There have been many changes at the club since the early day's with founder members Tam Gillies, Hughie McShane and John Tierney sadly passing away while other founder members have since retired from the running of the club. The committee of today are President Ian Anderson, Treasurer Wullie Downie, Competition Secretary Stevie Newns, Secretary Willie Hamilton, Sandy Collins and our club delegate to ABS Ltd, Eddie Humphries onto the committee. All of the club's coaches and officials have been screened through Disclosure Scotland. |
